Abraham Lincoln is regarded as one of the most outstanding American Presidents in history. He abolished the abominable system of slavery. He worked hard to preserve the unity and integrity of his country. The speech delivered by Lincoln at Gettysburg at the dedication of the military cemetry has been known as the greatest speech in American history. Lincoln vowed ‘That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of tthe people, by the people, for Ihe people, shall not perish from the Earth.”
Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 at Kentucky. His fatber Thomas Lincoln was a poor man. As such Lincoln’s early life was full of hardships and he could not study much. In 1831 he left home and worked in a variety of jobs. He became a store clerk and thereafter he qualified himself to be a lawyer. In 1847 he was elected for the American congress and became president of U.S.A in 1861. He was candidate of the Republican party. American civil war, a war of national preservation broke in 1861 and when it was still going on Lincoln abolished slavery throughout the United States. Actually, whole of the country was devided over the question of abolition of slavery. The southern states of America, that were chiefly agricultural desired to retain slavery as it was a necessity for their economy. I’he civil war lasted for about four years and Lincoln decided that war had become necessary for keeping the country united. However, the southern states were defeated. In a historic civil rights move, on January 1, 1863 Lincoln promulgated the emancipaton proclamation abolishing slavery. But Lincoln didn’t live long to enjoy the fruits of his hard work. On April 15, I $65 an insane actor assassinated him while he was watching a theatrical performance in Washington.
