1iot steps. He became a professional clown at the age f 17. In 1912 he emigrated to USA where the film itidustry was still growing. In 1914 Chaplin went to I Irillywood where he acquired great fame as an actor. I(yNtone studios hired him for its seapstick comedies. (tlinplin completed 35 short films for them. The ilirinicter of the little tramp was a hit with audience iiicI thereby Chaplin became popular. In the ensuing vtrs he gave memorable performances in few silent qcrwn classics. ‘The Kid’, ‘The Gold Rush.’‘The (‘rlInpiofl’ and ‘Shoulder Arms’ were his famous. Talkie f)Iiii nppeared by 1920. Here also Chaplin came to Lime light. City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator were his best films. Infact these films werre written by Chaplin himself. In “The Great Dictator’ (1940) Chaplin depicted the role of Adolf Hitler. His ideas in these films were marvellous.
Chaplin left USA in 1951 for Europe and he had retained his British citizenship in 1952. But he didn’t get entry in USA on the fact that he had communist sympathies. Therefore he went to Switzerland where he died in 1977.
Chaplin was a great comedian. He had gone to U.S to accept the Academy award for special achievement from the Motion picture Academy of America in 1972. Queen Elizabeth II Knighted him in 1975. In his lifetime Chaplin contributed for the development of Cinema. He was a good director also. Even today (2000 A.D.) his films are best sold in the form of VCD’s. He was the most dominant figure in the world cinema. He was criticized for his four marriages to women much younger than himself. At the age of 54 he married Oona O’Neill 18 year old daughter of playwright Eugen O’Neill. Their daughter Geraldine Chaplin acted in Chaplin’s last major film ‘Lime Light.’
Chaplin died in 1977 and in 1978 his body was stolen from the cemetry and it has not been found thereafter. As a comedian, no actor has aquired such a popularity like Chaplin in the cinema world.
