Gunnar Myrdal was an economist and a thinker. He was born in Sweden. After his education he worked in Stockholm university as a professor of political and international economy. He also served as executive secretary of the United Nations Economic commission for Europe for ten years since 1947. He studied social and economic problems of South America and Asia who were considered as under developed. Myrdal desired that these countries should initiate harder steps to get rid of poverty. After the second world war he was recognised as a specialist in economics. He discussed the economic problems of South Asian countries in his book Asian Drama. Myrdal was well known for political element in the development of economic theory and also for his deep study of US race relations, an American Dilemma (1944). Alva Reimer is the wife of Gunnar Myrdal. She led the movement for peace and disarmament. She was awarded Nobel prize for peace in 1982 where as Dr. Gunnar Myrdal was awarded Nobel prize for economics in 1974. She was Swedish ambassador to India in 1955. The couple were closely associated with India and they were awarded Nehru International peace award in 1981. Alva Myrdal served the Swedish government till 1973. She was minister for disarmament and church affairs. She won Albert Einstein peace prize in 1980.
Gunnar Myrdal wrote well known books on economics viz the ‘American Dilemma’, ‘Monetary Equilibrium’ and ‘Economic theory and Underdeveloped regions.’ He wrote a book with his wife titled ‘The crisis in the population question.
