Ravishankar is a great Sitarist and an exponent of Indian music. He learnt music from Ustad Alauddin Khan of Mahian. His brother Uday Shankar was a dancer. Ravi shankar devoted to sitar and grew into an incomparable sitarist. He has won popularity all over the world having innumerable disciples. In Western Countries, his music is honored and there the people say that they have derived ‘spiritual satisfaction’ out of his music. When Ravi Shankar starts playing on his instrument, the air surrounding fills with the rhythmic sound and enters the ears of listeners. People enjoy the performance.
Ravishankar’s music is aesthetic and brings solace. During 1969 – 74 he composed and conducted festival of India music. His orchestral music for the ballet set to Pandit Nehru’s Discovery of India’ was extraordinary. He has worked with many top musicians of the World. Music is divine to him. He was a music director in All India Radio, Delhi from 1949 to 1955. Music for the welcome song for the 9th Asiad in Delhi in 1982 was composed by Ravishankar. Ravishankar is the recipient of number of awards apart from Bharat Ratna and Magsaysay. The important of them are : ‘International Music Vensco Award’, ‘Venice festival award’ and ‘Presidential Award’. He was a fellow of Sangeet Natak Academy in 1976. Many univerisities of India and abroad have conferred doctorates on him. He established a schOol of music in Los Angeles to popularise Indian music. In 1986 he was nominated to Rajyasabha. Documentary films have been produced on Ravishankar’s life and times, He is the cultural ambassador of India in Western countries.
